The Hiz
Although not obvious from this view, this is in fact part of the River Hiz, from which Hitchin's name is derived. The river has been modified here to provide a 'water feature' beside St Mary's Church.

The junction of Hermitage Road, Queen Street and Walsworth Road, Hitchin
Viewsed from Windmill Hill. Queen Street is to the left, Hermitage Road straight ahead and Walsworth Road to the right. Hermitage Road was opened in 1875, built on land, which had formed part of his garden, donated by Mr. Frederic Seebohm who wished it be used to shorten the distance from the town centre to the railway station. In truth, the distance saved was minimal but it was, nevertheless, a grand gesture.

Viewed across the Hiz from St Mary's Square, the river has been engineered in this area to form an ornamental lake. The colourful canopies of Hitchin market can be seen on the left and St Mary's Church on the right.
