The well at Preston
The well on the green was provided in 1872 by Darton family of Temple Dinsley when local ponds had dried up in a hot summer, and is 69m deep. It has, however, been capped. The winding gear is quite elaborate - the large wheels on each side are flywheels and have handles. The pulley on the top axle raised and lowered the bucket, and the gearing between the flywheel axle and the pulley axle is 15:96. The purpose of the other gearwheel is not known.
