Bunyan's Dell, Wain Wood, Preston
See Image] for an explanation and a Winter view. I have copied the grid reference from the one for this image. I was surprised to find that the OS maps do not show this pit, which I should think was dug to extract clay.

Bunyan's Dell in Wain Wood
The Dell was used by John Bunyan, the author of Pilgrim's Progress and non-comformist preacher, for 'illicit' services in the 17th century. Hitchin historian Reginald Hine wrote: ‘At Wain Wood, in Hitchin parish, there was no preaching shed. The cottage is still there with its pleasant ingle-nook in which Bunyan smoked many a peaceful pipe. But it was in the woodland dell which is still known as Bunyan’s Dell, under the trees and under the stars, that he preached to his “gathered church” which numbered sometimes over a thousand souls. If it drenched with rain, there were four devoted women ever at hand to hold an apron over his bare head as he preached.’ I'm reliably informed that the oil drum just visible in this view is not contemporary to Bunyan! Wain Wood is just part of an ancient woodland which stretched from Hitchin to Hatfield. Because of the diversity of its flora, it is designated as a site of Special Scientific Interest.

Footpath to Wain Wood
The path enters the wood at the centre of the image, and a branch path continues around the edge of the wood and continues northwards to Tatmorehills Lane, which is a track going all the way to Hitchin. These to paths are shown going across the field on the OS map, but they have been diverted around the edge.

Notice at entrance to Wain Wood
Wain Wood is a surviving part of a large area of ancient woodland, and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest. There are some paths in the wood other than the public one, no doubt used by the local people, but they only affect a small part of the woodland.
