I think this type of pruning is called emondage, or branch pruning. It reminds me of the trees around squares in France, Spain and Portugal.

A public footpath meets but does not this lane, which comes from Ashbrook Lane appears to be heading for a sewage works but the map shows that it just gives access to a field.
