Up ECML express passing Hitchin
View northward, towards Peterborough and the North on the ECML, also Cambridge (right) and Bedford (by Midland, left); on the right is Hitchin Yard Box. The express, probably the 07.05 Bradford/07.30 Leeds 'West Riding' to King's Cross, is headed by - a very dirty - Gresley A4 4-6-2 No. 60008 'Dwight D. Eisenhower', which was built 9/37 as No. 4496 and named 'Golden Shuttle' until 9/45, withdrawn 7/63, preserved and sent to the USA for display at the National Railroad Museum at Greenbank, Wisconsin.

Arrival at Hitchin
The train is signalled for the Cambridge line which at that time would have required crossing the East Coast Main Line on the level. Since 2013, such conflicting movements have been removed by the construction of a flyover for 'down' Cambridge line trains.

Up coal train passing Hitchin
View northward, towards Peterborough on the ex-GN ECML, also Cambridge to the right. (See also Image]). The heaviest coal traffic of all brought up to London and the South-East was carried on the ECML, by frequent trains lumbering up from the New England Yards at Peterborough to Ferme Park Yard, Hornsey. This is a Class F train, headed by BR 9F 2-10-0 No. 92044 (built 1/55, withdrawn 4/65), one of a large team of heavy freight locomotives allocated to New England Depot for this traffic, which were all turned round at Hornsey and returned to Peterborough.
