Hertford North railway station
Viewed looking in the direction of Stevenage with a train for Moorgate about to depart, the station and railway line are on the Hertford Loop Line and were built as recently as 1924. This was not the first railway in this location though as the route of the former Hatfield to Hertford railway, which was built in 1858, used to pass through what is now the densely tree covered area to the right before swinging eastwards over the River Beane to the original Hertford North station about a kilometre away. This line closed in 1951 and the track was lifted in 1967.

Hertford North Station
The history of railways in Hertford is surprisingly complicated for a small home counties town. This Hertford North station was opened in 1924 as a stop on the newly built extension to Stevenage of the Great Northern Railway's Edgware branch. Prior to that there had been another Great Northern station in a different location used by trains on the branch from Welwyn Garden City (Hatfield before 1920), but this was closed to passengers when the new station was built despite its being more conveniently sited for the town centre. Passenger services on the Welwyn branch ceased in 1951, leaving Hertford North as a commuter station with regular services to King's Cross - the role it continues to play today. The modern booking hall, which incorporates a shop, is functional but lacks the elegance of Hertford's other station, Hertford East.

Trains from this station are currently operated by First Capital Connect, and there is a normal weekday service at twenty minute intervals to Moorgate. However the journey time is just under fifty minutes and there are seventeen intermediate stops.
