Falconwood Cemetery (6) - gate detail
The inscription on the gate - which confusingly is to be read down one side and up the other - is "Clamant nostra tela in Regis querela"
("Our weapons clash in the King's quarrel") - the motto of the old Borough of Woolwich. The whole coat of arms symbolises the presence of the Royal Arsenal, the three lions' heads being superimposed on three cannon. However there is no reference to the Royal Dockyard, which was established a century or two before the Arsenal. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_Borough_of_Woolwich
