A plaque celebrating the life and death of Christopher Marlowe
He is said to be buried in the churchyard of St. Nichols Deptford. But legend has it that he was not murdered in 1593 but escaped charges of treason by fleeing to the West Country and changing his name to William Shakespeare.

St. Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green, SE8 - east gateway
This new gateway was designed by the architects Austin Winkley & Associates. The symbols of three golden balls on the brick piers refer to one of St. Nicholas' good works. He heard of a merchant who had three daughters and who, because of hard times, could not provide dowries so the daughters would have been forced into prostitution, but they were saved by three sacks of gold thrown anonymously (by St. Nicholas) into the merchant's house. {Source: Leaflet "St Nicholas' Church, Deptford Green".}
