St George's church, Westcombe Park
St George's Anglican church is built on a hill, with the worship area (nave) at the upper level entered from Glenluce Road, and a lower hall facing Kirkside Road on this north side. It originally had its own parish but is now part of the East Greenwich Team Ministry http://www.southwark.anglican.org/parishes/098bl The church was built in 1890-92 to the designs of Newman & Newman. A story often told of this building is that in the Silvertown explosion in 1917 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silvertown_explosion the roof was lifted and returned four inches out of place. Other sources suggest this actually occurred in the second world war. Either way, the damage was put right when repairs were carried out around 1950.

St George's, Westcombe Park: east end
St George's church Image is not easy to photograph because of the trees around the perimeter of the churchyard. This glimpse of the east end shows the great height of the building (17 metres).

St George's church, made more visible
For many years the trees surrounding the church had made it virtually invisible in summer. Greenwich Council eventually gave permission to have them pollarded to make the building more obvious to passers-by.

St George's church, with pews removed
The church dates from 1890 and its original pews had become worn and rickety, requiring repair as a result of frequently being moved to make space for events in the church. Eventually they were removed and replaced with more comfortable, stackable chairs.

West end of St George's church
This Anglican church, despite its great height, is almost hidden by trees and buildings. This glimpse of the west end of the church between two houses on Mycenae Road is one of the few views possible.
