Five-car London Overground train
It was several months since the Overground introduced 5-car trains but they were still bearing headboards as if it was the first day of operation. This example was seen at Sydenham station on a service to West Croydon. Some stations including Whitechapel and Rotherhithe, located tightly between tunnels, could not be adapted for 5-car trains meaning that the doors in one end car have to remain shut.

Sydenham station
The railway through here was opened by the London & Croydon Railway as early as 1849, and Sydenham station opened with the line. For a time, atmospheric traction was used. In the present photograph, London Overground unit No 378 150 is seen at the Up platform on a working to Dalston Junction.

Sydenham station, up platform entrance
The main station building at Sydenham is on the southbound, down, side; on the northbound, up, side (whose platform is staggered and overlaps the other for some considerable distance to the north) a side entrance leads from Spring Hill direct onto the platform.

Sydenham station
The platforms at Sydenham are staggered so that a photograph of the whole length of the Up platform can be obtained from the Down platform. The two centre tracks are used by non-stopping Southern and Capital Connect services.

Sydenham station
London Overground trains pass at Sydenham. On the left, No 378 152 has come from Crystal Palace and is destined for Norwood Junction, while on the right is 378 139 on the reverse working. The curve round from Sydenham to Crystal Palace opened in 1854 and was in fact the first line to serve Crystal Palace, which became a very popular destination soon afterwards.
