The Wainwright C class was the standard 0-6-0 of the Eastern Section of the SR, amounting to 109 examples: No. 31071 was built as No. 71 in 7/1901 and withdrawn in 9/59.

One of several parcels businesses in this area (not surprising, as the Royal Mail sorting office is just out of shot to the right, hence the large postbox on the pavement). Both are built on the site of the former Bricklayers Arms railway goods yard.

View SE, inside one of the several loading-banks of the extensive Goods Depot and Locomotive Shed complex that constituted one of London's largest Railway Depots. It was at the west end of a branch from Bricklayer's Arms Junction and was the original terminus of the South Eastern Railway from 1/5/1844 to just eight years later. It was closed to passengers in 1/1852 and to Goods over 125 years later on 1/8/77.

The houses are probably of the same age as the railway buildings beyond them Image The roof arrangement, with each house having a gable end and a valley gutter between adjacent houses, is unusual and may be influenced by the form of industrial buildings.

This box serves mainly business customers as there are not many houses around here yet, although the buildings to the left in the photo Image are due to be replaced by housing in the next few years.

The most numerous of Robert Billinton's several varieties of 0-6-2Ts were his E4 class, one of which has survived in preservation - on the Bluebell Railway, with its original name 'Birch Grove': No. 473 was built 8/1898 and withdrawn as 32473 in 10/62. Here it is on the turntable at Bricklayer's Arms Depot in 1959.

This area was previously the Bricklayers Arms railway goods yards and is now mainly distribution warehouses: a very visible triumph of road over rail.

After what had been billed as the strongest storm in Southern England for ten years, there was actually not much evidence of damage the next morning. This tree on the corner of Curtis Street was the only fallen one I saw in my 11km journey to work.
