114 and 116 Church Road
A symmetrical (mirror image) pair of Italianate mid-C19th white brick houses. Each has a tower, that feature so beloved of Victorians, pierced by a pair of unusually tall and thin round-headed windows. As may be apparent, the house on the right is now a hotel. Church Road has a number of good suburban villas dating from around this time, many of which have been converted to multiple occupancy or institutional use, and most of its buildings are within a Conservation Area.

Westow Lodge and Beulah Villa, Church Road
Two good early C19th houses. The one on the left has a tall central storey and a bowed verandah. It either is or was in the process of being renovated. The one on the right has fretted bargeboards. Both are Grade II listed. Church Road has a number of good suburban villas dating from around this time, many of which have been converted to multiple occupancy or institutional use, and most of its buildings are within a Conservation Area.

Queen's Hotel, Church Road
A grandiose building which is visible from some distance around. By F. Pouget in 1853-54. It was partly rebuilt after a fire in 1975 and there is a modern extension to the right (out of shot). A blue plaque on the ground floor records that the French novelist, Emile Zola, lived at the hotel in 1898-99. He fled France after being sentenced to imprisonment for writing a letter (J'accuse) in defence of Alfred Dreyfus.
