Tesco Extra, Woolwich
Until recently Tesco was the only major supermarket without a town centre presence in Woolwich. That changed when this new store, claimed to be the largest supermarket in South-East London, opened in November 2012. For the demolition of the previous buildings on the site, see Image A future phase of the development will see a tall residential development above it.

Maritime House in Tesco's glass, Woolwich
Maritime House is possibly the most conspicuous building in central Woolwich. Here it is reflected in the glazed facade of the Tesco Extra on Love Lane.

Woolwich Central development, Woolwich
Placing Image] in more context. The development which extends to the left towards Woolwich New Road, had the dubious distinction of being voted winner of the Carbuncle Cup in 2014 as Britain's worst new building: "oppressive, defensive, arrogant and inept", according to the judges. On the right is the public library.

The Woolwich Centre, nearly finished
One of the largest elements of the major redevelopment of Woolwich Town Centre was this complex, including council offices for around 2000 staff, a public information centre and public library. At this point in May 2011, the structure was complete and being fitted out. Commercial parts of the development were to include a large supermarket, hotel and apartments. A similar development (also with a leisure centre) had opened in 2008 in Eltham Image Council website link: http://www.royalgreenwich.gov.uk/info/200119/customer_services/1193/our_service_centres/2

The Woolwich Centre
Council offices for the Royal Borough of Greenwich opened in August 2011, also housing a new Woolwich Library. "Inspire a generation" is the motto for the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics, the shooting events for which were held at the nearby Royal Artillery Barracks. For closer view of the motto see Image

Shops, little and large
I wonder how much trade Sai News on Wellington Street had lost since the opening of the huge Tesco Extra Image a few months earlier (seen down the side street in the photo). The other small store on the corner had closed for good.

Woolwich town centre demolition
An eight-storey building being demolished to make way for the new Tesco development in the town centre. Part of the new build can be seen to the right of the photo. I have not found a view of this building prior to demolition.
