Woolwich Common: disused drinking fountain
The fountain has been stripped of its pipework and basins, leaving just the obelisk, which is a memorial to Robert John Little (died 1861). His epitaph is "sustained by the fountain of living waters, he devoted himself to the honour of God and the relief of human suffering". On two sides of the obelisk are quotations from the Bible relating to drink : Proverbs 20:1 condemning drunkenness, and John 4:13-14 where Christ calls himself the 'living water'. It is listed grade 2, and on English Heritage's 'buildings at risk register' because of its poor state of repair.

Funny road name
...although I was not so amused to spend so much time in traffic that I could safely take this picture while stationary! (Ha-Ha refers to the sloping ditch with vertical brick wall running along the North side of the road (where the 'Green Chain Walk' appears on the map) - this ditch was used to keep animals grazing on Woolwich Common off the land in front of the Royal Artillary parade ground and headquarters.)

Woolwich Common: 'Metropolitan' horse trough
One of many drinking troughs around London provided by the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association, as the inscription on the far side states. On this side, it says "be kind and merciful to all animals". In the background is a former drinking fountain for humans Image
