Hampton House, Albert Embankment
One of a series of post-war office blocks lining the southern stretch of Albert Embankment. Hampton was completed in 1956, the architect Frederick Gibberd, making it one of the first office blocks to be built following the lifting of the post-war austerity building restrictions in 1954. Banners advertise office space, but any tenant would have to fight their way through hoardings: it currently awaits demolition to be replaced by three towers designed by Norman Foster and Partners.

Development, Albert Embankment (2)
Two years after this photo Image The 1960s ugly ducklings have been swept away. The new buildings appear, albeit from a distance, to be of a higher calibre than many of the current high rises. The trio on the left is "The Corniche" (by Foster & Partners), that on the right is "Merano Residences" (by Rogers Stirk Harbour & Partners), while the core in the middle will be "The Dumont" (by David Walker Architects). The developer is Berkeley Group.

Development, Albert Embankment (3)
The eight months since Image] has seen the middle building, The Dumont, progress nicely. The other two are complete, at least externally. The ominous clouds did not fulfil their promise meaning that London's rainless spell of 2-3 weeks continued.

Development, Albert Embankment (4)
Since Image], the middle building is now largely complete. It's the weakest of the three, rather stodgier than the other two. Compared to what's going on down the road at Vauxhall Cross, however, these are all masterpieces.
