Elephant & Castle station
Looking north. This station was first opened on what became the London, Chatham and Dover railway in October 1862. At first it was only served from the southerly direction from Herne Hill. Quadrupling soon followed and a connection to Farringdon via Blackfriars. A great variety of services have used this station over the years. A big advance came in 1988 with the introduction of Thameslink cross-London services from Bedford to Brighton. The station is used by the circular service via Wimbledon and Sutton.
