Hope (Sufferance) Wharf, St. Marychurch Street, SE16
The wharf gets its name from the time when all ships had to unload at the Customs House. With increasing volumes of trade, this was often not possible, and so ships were allowed or "suffered" to unload here or at other sufferance quaysides. The buildings have been converted into flats.

Erected 1821 and the then establishment consisted of a beadle (minor parish official), constables, street keepers and a watchman (aka 'a Charlie'). The 'Charlies' main role was to prevent the theft of bodies from the grave yards that were opposite and behind the building. See other image for a rear view http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1481513.
