Former Pioneer Health Centre, St Mary's Road
By Owen Williams, 1934-35. An experiment to encourage more healthy lifestyles among local residents, including the provision of leisure facilities such as swimming pool, gym, and theatre. The building is entirely concrete and glass, its front attractively undulating (Image]). Grade II* listed. It is now, inevitably, private, gated flats, although is occasionally open to the public. The tennis court in front - in use on a balmy November day - perhaps makes a nod to its original function.
