East London Line train at New Cross Gate ? 1970
A single track served for the terminus of this branch of the East London Line, still operated as part of the Metropolitan Line. The line was the last haunt of the pre-war Q Stock with its distinctive clerestory roofs. The extensive freight and carriage sidings seen here have all disappeared

Overground depot headshunt, New Cross Gate
Signal EL 300 on the right seems to be principally for trains setting back wrong line to enter the depot via the connection with a 15 limit in the distance. There also appears to be provision for trains to reverse at New Cross Gate and return to the north, but this is not a regular timetable feature. The usual northbound track is on the other side of the station, and crosses the main lines via the bridge on the left.

East London line train at New Cross Gate.
Destined for Whitechapel, it will pass through the oldest underwater tunnel in the world, begun by Marc Brunel and completed by his son. The A60 stock shown was originally built for service on the Baker Street to Amersham, Metropolitan line.

London Transport East London Line train at New Cross Gate Station ? 1970
The sets allocated to the East London Line were the last of the former District Railway stock with clerestory-style roof to run on the Underground system, classed as Q-stock. Built between 1927 and 1932, they were finally withdrawn from service the following year.

Brighton 'Atlantic' at New Cross Gate Depot, 1948
An ex-LB&SCR Marsh class H2 4-4-2, built 3/1911 and withdrawn 8/56, long allocated to Newhaven to work the Dieppe Boat Express up to Victoria. [As a small boy pre-WW2, I was thrilled by seeing it leaving Newhaven Harbour, when I was on one of my rare, half-term releases from prep-school. Also, this is one of my very early photographs, so is offered hesitatingly.]
