This was the former Licensed Victuallers' School which was built in 1836. Pevsner points out that "A school would never have been so ambitious in its architecture before the 19th century, when higher education for the middle class became important enough for the monumental". The Licensed Victuallers also built almshouses off the Old Kent Road on a monumental scale - see http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2696889

Always a jolly sight to greet the passing motorist. Presumably the colouring is a condition of the lease. These are probably mid C19th.

Now flats, but built in 1836 as the Licensed Victualler's School, the architect Henry Rose. Quite an imposing building, with a rusticated ground floor and central Composite portico. Grade II listed. Pevsner commented that the ambition of the architecture reflected the growing importance of middle-class education.
