Panels at the rear of Brangwyn Hall
Frank Brangwyn painted 16 panels commissioned for the House of Lords. When they were rejected for being too colourful, Swansea incorporated them into the building of the Guildhall and renamed the assembly room to the "Brangwyn Hall". Here you can see a 17th panel just above the doorway which was painted especially to fill the gap. The panels depict the people, flora and fauna of the empire in a bright and fantastic collage.

Viking detail in Swansea Guildhall
Legend has it that Swansea was named "Sweyne's Ey" by the Vikings - after Sweyne Forkbeard, a 10th century Viking king. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/whatsinaname/sites/placenames/pages/swansea.shtml The Guildhall was built with quite a bit of Viking detailing to hark back to Swansea's past. Here is an example of the faces on the keystones of the doorways. See also Image

View to Swansea Guildhall tower
The County Hall car park is a handy free place to park on a weekend (and always empty - the 10 minute walk to the city centre must be too much for some!)

The council chamber in Swansea Guildhall
This chamber is extensively covered in exotic hardwood and has a tapestry running all around it below the ceiling. For example, the supporting steel & concrete pillars are clad in scalloped shells of walnut. The shells are made from two single pieces each spanning the entire height of the column and carved from a whole tree. The chamber is now too precious to be used for everyday meetings and is only used for special occasions.

Swansea Guildhall and Flagpole
The Guildhall is the headquarters of the City and County of Swansea Council and its tower is modelled on a Viking longship to honour Swansea's Norse origins. The flagpole sports a Ukrainian flag to show support for the country following the recent Russian invasion.

The Brangwyn Hall
The Brangwyn Hall is a concert venue within Swansea's Guildhall. This is a shot of the stage with its built-in pipe organ. The hall is named after the panels, painted by Frank Brangwyn, that adorn its walls. See also Image

Swansea Guildhall Tower
View from Uplands. Just above the clock faces of the Portland limestone tower, the prows of "Viking ships" jut out - a reference to Sweyn Forkbeard, the alleged founder of the city. On the horizon to the right is Dunkery Beacon - the highest point in Exmoor.
