Legend has it that Swansea was named "Sweyne's Ey" by the Vikings - after Sweyne Forkbeard, a 10th century Viking king. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/whatsinaname/sites/placenames/pages/swansea.shtml The Guildhall was built with quite a bit of Viking detailing to hark back to Swansea's past.
