Swansea Victoria Station, with train
View westward away from buffers, towards Pontardulais, Llandilo, Llandovery, Llandrindod Wells and Craven Arms; terminus of ex-London & North Western Central Wales line from Craven Arms. This station along with the final section from Pontadulais was closed on 27/6/64, the service being diverted to Llanelli and now after reversal runs on from there to Swansea High Street. Here Stanier Class 5 4-6-0 No. 45298 has arrived at 16.17 on the 12.00 through from Shrewsbury, with 28 stops - hardly an express.

Swansea Leisure Centre
View of the Centre when still quite new. The Queen opened it officially when she visited Swansea on her 1977 Jubilee tour. The centre has a groundbreaking pool with "beach" and wave machine. In the background can be seen the tower of St. Mary's church.

The empty shell of Swansea Leisure Centre
Swansea Leisure Centre was a modern state of the art (if not rather ugly) leisure centre when it was built and opened in 1977. Designed to serve Swansea for the next 50 or so years, it was abruptly closed without notice in November 2003 when major structural defects were found in the building's construction. For a while it looked likely to be completely demolished but it was decided to refurbish the original building at an estimated cost of £25 million. Future plans are ambitious: when it reopens in 2008 it will house Europe's first indoor surf boarding ride 'SurfStream'. The leisure centre will also boast an indoor water park consisting of a network of pools, water rides, and slides, including the Masterblaster, the world's first uphill water slide. Plus a lazy river will allow children to body surf and there will be an interactive pool with play equipment, a toddler teaching facility in the Lagoon Pool and baby classes in the Kids Pool.

Swansea Leisure Centre water features (original 1977 design)
This 1997 view shows the water features to be found at Swansea's Leisure Centre. A small shelter can be seen in the right distance. The Leisure Centre was opened by the Queen in 1977 and was built on the site of the 1867 LNWR Swansea Victoria station. This LNWR terminus closed to passengers in 1964. The viaduct in the background carried freight traffic to and from the terminus. The Leisure Centre has since been renovated (now LC2) but the area in this view is now a car park.
