Stevenson screen, Port Talbot fire station
Located inside a fenced-off compound, http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2939053 the Stevenson screen is the white box with slatted sides, on a stand. It is designed to shield meteorological instruments against precipitation and direct radiation from outside sources, while still allowing air to circulate freely inside. It thus provides a standardised environment, allowing the readings to be compared with those taken in similar conditions elsewhere.
