River Don flood defences
The flood defences on both sides of the River Don have been heightened following a major and damaging flood in 2007. These new defences were successful (just) in preventing a recurrence in November 2019.

Brightside Weir on the River Don
A weir has existed here since at least 1328 - at which time the Lord of Sheffield Manor - Thomas de Furnival owned a cornmill on the opposite bank. Much later that rural idyll was superseded by the growth of Sheffield's steel industry when the River Don became little more than a mucky ditch for industrial waste.
