Sunset at Woolley wood, Wincobank
The obstacle course for bikes in the foreground is really popular though there is no sign of use in this shot. Just a pity that walks through the woodland sometimes involve getting out of the way of people illegally using it for motorbikes.

The Lost Gateway
'The Lost Gateway' is located near the Barrow Road entrance of Woolley Wood, an ancient woodland with a number of archaeological features. It was first documented in 1597 as ‘Woollywoodside.' The woodland was managed on a system of coppice with standards from the 16th century until the latter part of the 19th century, whereupon a system of ‘high forest’ was introduced, along with plantings of beech and hornbeam. The gateway is made from reclaimed stone and was recently constructed by Mick Humphries.

The Lost Gateway Project (completed 2010)
The artwork takes the form of an ‘ancient’ crumbling stone gateway with words inscribed on it. Woolley Woods is seen as the ‘wood between the worlds’ where you can find portals into other universes. A group of artists (Ana Ospina, Gordon Young, Saffron Waghorn, Ian Cooper, Tony Slater and Russell Coleman) put the finishing touches, carving images from the legend of Fenrir and ancient Viking runes to add an extra layer of enchantment to the stones.

The Wincobank Hotel
A classic triangular corner pub. Now displaying a Thwaites sign, but would have been a Stone's, Ward's or Tetley's pub in the past.

Another path through Woolley Wood, Wincobank
Generally this is a nice place to walk. Some users, as with many municipal areas, might pose a risk to those they feel would be an easy target. There is some fly tipping, the occasional burnt out car, used syringes, unofficial trial bike riding the usual suspects which would diminish if the area was used more as there would be more eyes to see what's there rather than what might happen.
