The grave of Sir Francis Chantrey
In Norton churchyard, Sheffield. Francis Leggatt Chantrey (1781-1841) was a self-taught sculptor who became Britain's leading portrait sculptor during the Regency period. Among his subjects were King George III, King George IV, George Washington, James Watt and William Pitt the Younger. He designed his own simple gravestone - leaving instructions that he was to be interred in his home parish churchyard after many years living and working in London.
