Railway north from Creswell station
Looking towards Worksop. The semaphore signal visible here is one of several in this area; however, the signal box that controls them (Elmton & Creswell Junction, which can just be picked out behind the signal) was switched out on this day and may have been closed completely. There is provision for a second signal arm; this would have been for trains diverging from the main line at the junction that formerly existed a little way ahead.

Blaggs' shop in Creswell
Later this former corner grocery shop sold tropical fish and associated supplies but now it sits opposite the old cinema, disused and forlorn

Cresswell station
View northward, towards Worksop (formerly also, curving to the left, towards Clowne etc.): ex-Midland Nottingham - Mansfield - Worksop, and Clowne branch to Staveley and Chesterfield. The station had been 'Elmton & Cresswell' until closed, along with the Nottingham - Worksop line, from 12/10/64. It was rebuilt as 'Cresswell' on 25/5/98, on the new Robin Hood Line which was restored Nottingham - Newstead in 5/93, on to Mansfield Woodhouse in 11/95 and to Worksop in 6/98. Passenger services on the Clowne branch to Chesterfield ceased from 5/7/54, but freight (coal) lasted another 30 years and it would seem that a use may yet be found for the line.

Creswell railway station, Derbyshire
Opened in 1886 by the Midland Railway on the line from Nottingham to Worksop, this station closed in 1964. It was reopened in 1998.
View south towards Langwith-Whaley Thorns and Nottingham. The original station building can just be seen on the left beyond the large modern structure.

Virks Convenience Store
The building is Edwardian and would originally been in the red brick used on the other properties on Elmton Street.
It struck me as I tried to buy a loaf and was offered a choice of a white sliced or nothing that these isolated old mining villages in the North Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire coalfields will take generations to change their dietary habits!
The local pit closed over 25 years ago.

Station Road, Creswell
The National Rail sign stands at the end of Station Road at its junction with Elmton Road with Welbeck Street straight ahead. The graffiti on the telephone box slightly mars this otherwise tidy scene. The solid brick wall on the left belongs to a former cinema, now a bingo hall.
