Memorial to the 26 children who died in the Huskar Pit Disaster
Twenty six children lost their lives on 4th July 1838 when a freak storm caused the surrounding streams to overflow and surge into the pit where the children were working. As a consequence of this disaster Queen Victoria set a royal commission in progress to enquire into the women and children working in mines. The memorial can be viewed from the access path into Nabbs Wood.

The Huskar Memorial (1988)
On 4th.July 1838, a violent thunderstorm raged. The rain put out the boiler fire of the Huskar pit and the engine used to bring the workers back to the surface was inoperable. Forty of the children underground decided to make their way out of the pit via an air door. As they made their way up, a stream which had swollen in size due to the rain, became a torrent into the air door and against the door which they had just passed. 26 children drowned.

The Huskar Monument
A memorial to the 26 children who lost their lives in 1838 when the Huskar Pit was flooded following an intense rainstorm. The monument features two children, a boy and a girl, in representations of the seams in which they were working. The youngest victim was only 7 years old and the inquiry into the disaster led to the 1842 Mines Act which prohibted all girls and boys the age of ten from working underground.
