Queen Anne's Obelisk, Stainborough Park
The obelisk was built in 1734 to commemorate Thomas Wentworth's patron Queen Anne, who had died twenty years earlier. In the distance to the left of the obelisk you can see Wentworth Castle. Thomas Wentworth (1672–1739) was an influential military man, First Lord of the Admiralty and wealthy diplomat in the early decades of the eighteenth century. He was responsible for purchasing and developing the estate.
