Old milestone
The first milestone out of Barnsley on the A635 on the Huddersfield route. It is one of the 615 original milestones set up by the family firm of Stead for the newly formed West Riding County Council in 1893/94. It needs a complete strip down and new coats of paint. It is Listed Grade II 1151771.

Old milestone
On the left side of the backing stone of the West Riding CC milestone on the A635 north of Barnsley is a very well cut benchmark. The top bolts holding the metal attachment to the stone can also be seen. A photograph for the benchmark enthusiasts.

Old Milestone by the A635, Wilthorpe Road, Wilthorpe
Metal plate attached to stone post by the A635, in parish of BARNSLEY (BARNSLEY District), Wilthorpe Road, 150m West of Rowland Road, on the verge, near Innovation Way, on South side of road. Brayshaw & Booth iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th century. Inscription reads:- : HUDDERSFIELD / 15¼ MILES / HOLMFIRTH / 13 MILES / DENBY DALE / 7¼ MILES / BRETTON / 5½ MILES / CAWTHORNE / 2 MILES : : BARNSLEY & GRANGE MOOR / ROAD / BARAUGH : : BARNSLEY / 1 MILE : Maker:- : BRAYSHAW & BOOTH / MAKERS / LIVERSEDGE : Carved benchmark on left side.
