The station is on the Sheffield-Leeds line. It is viewed here from the bridge that once carried a tramway over the railway to the Milton Ironworks.

What was the Electra Palace situated close to the railway station in Elsecar. This theatre was later renamed the Futurist but has been disused since the mid nineties.

Leeds-bound train at Elsecar
Local passengers have the dubious pleasure of riding in class 142 diesel units. With only two axles per carriage, these trains do not give the most comfortable of rides unless the track is in really good condition.

Electra Palace, Elsecar (detail)
The original name (it was renamed the Futurist in 1938) is picked out in mosaics which have survived remarkably well. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/3549995

Electra Palace, Elsecar
A fine example of an early custom-built cinema, built in 1912. It appears to be unused at present, although the fabric is still in excellent condition. See http://cinematreasures.org/theaters/18473 for more information.

Passengers alighting at Elsecar
Quite a reasonable number of passengers alighted from this train. Elsecar is the least well served station on the Sheffield to Barnsley line as during the daytime only one of the four trains per hour between Sheffield and Barnsley makes a stop here. Oddly enough, the service is better in the early evening when two per hour actually stop. The service to Huddersfield (see indicator board) also only makes stops here during the early evening period.

Opened in 1897 by the Midland Railway on the line from Sheffield to Leeds. View north east towards Wombwell and Leeds. The "& Hoyland" was dropped from the name in 1971.
