Old Milestone by the former A628, Brierley Road, Shafton Parish
Metal plate attached to stone post by the UC road (was A628), in parish of SHAFTON (BARNSLEY District), Shafton Two Gates, on grass verge just North East of traffic lights, on South East side of road. Barnsley/Pontefract, Grove Foundry iron casting, erected by the County Council in the 19th/20th century.

Old milestone
In Shafton on the old A628 towards Hemsworth and Pontefract the metal attachment was painted by an unknown local in 2018. It is near a crossroads, now severed by the Shafton by-pass and the area is known as Shafton Two Gates. The 11 mile long Barnsley and Pontefract Turnpike was enacted in 1875, lasted until 1870 and had 3 main gates and 3 side gates. It is Grade II listed 333772

Old milepost
In 2018 this metal post at Shafton Two Gates just north of the X roads on the old A628 now by-passed was painted by a local. Now rust is showing through. The Barnsley to Pontefract tollroad lasted from 1825 to 1870 and 7 posts which may have been erected by the Trust remain. It is Grade II Listed 1151129.
