St Mary's church, Worsbrough - monument to Sir Roger Rockley
St Mary's church contains this unusual double-decker monument to Sir Roger Rockley who died in 1522 or 1553 (depending on source). Both effigies are of oak, the upper effigy features the painted figure of Sir Roger in armour, the lower effigy represents Sir Roger as a decomposing cadaver, although not too accurate in its anatomical detail. The figures are said to have been covered with fine linen, made to adhere closely to the wood before being painted.
