Former Shop and Off-Licence, Top of Blake Street, Walkley, Sheffield - February 2009
Opposite The Blake Pub is this corner building ... from the fancy scroll work above the door and windows this too may have been a pub. Image Image Update in September 2012 I have finally found an answer to the history of this building ... and seen a coloured photograph of it in the late 1970s ... when it was a Grocery Store and Off-Licence, owned by a family called Whitehouse, and, according to the Sheffield Forum, in the 1980s a family called Baron. In the photo the shop's woodwork is painted Red and White and the walls are not cemented over. There is a sign on the glass over the door which looks like Nut Brown and a large sign on the wall advertising Gunstones. Confusingly, it is unclear but look like the advertising is for Beer and not Bread. These details can be seen in the History section of Friends of Ruskin Park web site ... follow this ... http://www.ianloasby.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ruskin/index.html For some comparison views taken in 2012 ... see ... Compare this view with that taken in February 2009 ... Image Not much has changed except for the completion of St Paul's Tower.

The Top of Blake Street
This thigh-burner is one of several 'steepest road in Sheffield' contenders. Most do agree however that this spot offers great views over the city centre and that the Blake Hotel on the right of picture is a fine boozer having finally reopened its doors in November 2010.

2009 Sign for The Blake Pub, Blake Street, Walkley, Sheffield
Although the pub is closed, the sign is still swinging in the breeze ... and I suspect the breeze is quite strong blowing up Blake Street! For a view of the 2012 sign, after the pub has re-opened ... see ... Image
