Footpath From Wadsley Lane to Carlton Road - Part 2, Sheffield
This bit is after the 'dog leg' ... nice rustic fence on the house opposite. Image Image

Carlton Road, Wadsley, Sheffield
The Wadsley United Reformed Church is on the right ... seems strange to build it at the top end of a residential street but maybe it was there before all the houses. I have titled the street as being in Wadsley ('cos that's how the Church is named) but I would describe it as being in Hillsborough. Mind you I'm not a local so what do I know. Image

Terminus Market Parade, Middlewood Road, Hillsborough, Sheffield - 1
On the centre of the parade of shops is a date stone reading TERMINUS : J.H.S.R. : 1923 : MARKET The Terminus would have been for the original Sheffield Tram system ... interestingly the modern Sheffield Supertram passes this way every few minutes, hence the Power Poles and Wires. Whilst I have driven past the shops on numerous occasions, it was as a passenger on the tram that I first spotted the sign. See also ... Image Image Image Since submitting this group of pictures I have been contacted by 'Hillsbro' who is a regular and knowledgeable member of the Sheffield Forum ... he informs me of the following and has kindly agreed for me to copy it to this picture. Thanks Hillsbro ... much appreciated. The 1925 Kelly's Directory doesn't mention the "Terminus Market" as such, but the address of the building that has the stone is 331 Middlewood Road. A few doors away at No 349 (next to the entrance to a yard) the directory shows "John H.S. Randall Ltd, builders". So this explains the initials J.H.S.R. - presumably this firm built the property near where their office and yard were situated. Looking a little further, the 1911 census shows "John Henry Stimpson Randall", a "Builder (speculative)" at the same address, 349 Middlewood Road. So John Randall was the property developer who built the "Terminus Market". He was born at Doddington in Cambridgeshire in 1875, the son of a master builder & innkeeper, and he died aged 80 in 1955, having moved to a large detached house in Whirlowdale Road, Sheffield. He must have done well! Update on 27th March ... For some views, information and links about 349 Middlewood Road - named appropriately Rand House - see ... Image

United Reformed Church, Carlton Road, Wadsley, Sheffield
Built in 1910 and still in fine order ... and (hopefully) organising some Centenary Celebrations next year. To one side is a footpath leading through to Wadsley Lane which makes sense of the 'Wadsley' address. Image Image Image Image
