'Closed All Hours' on Middlewood Road and Marion Road, Middlewood, Sheffield
Unlike 'Arkwrights' this typical corner shop, from long ago, hasn't been open for some time. This view shows it open in 1998, complete with advertising hoarding and car advert on the side of the shop ... Image For a view of the opposite corner, see ... Image

Corner Shop, Middlewood Road and Marion Road, Middlewood, Sheffield
The sign on the corner reads G W Gilling, Cash Grocery & Provision Stores ... I would imagine this dates from the 1950s or 1960s. Certainly would have been around when the first lot of Sheffield Trams were running past the door ... nowadays it's the Sheffield Supertram running past, hence the overhead lines. For a view of the opposite corner, see ...Image

Rear of Marlcliffe School from Overton Road
On the right of the picture is the only original entrance I can find marked BOYS on both pillars. This is shown more clearly in a further picture. There are two original entrances for GIRLS and INFANTS on Marlcliffe Road, plus a third set on (this) Overton Road. These are not shown on this picture but are off to the left. A separate picture does show these. Seems a bit unfair, but, hey, that's life! See also ... Image Image Image Image Image Image

Tramway in Middlewood Road
The road going off on the left is Marion Road. The tram is number 10 (now renumbered 110), and is in the original livery of a rather drab two tone grey. Sheffield has a lot of traditional street running sections, where the trams mix with other traffic. Middlewood Road is typical of these.

Willows, Wires and Where's That Tram? ... Middlewood Road, Middlewood, Sheffield
Willows is the name of the Apartments Block - built on the site of the former Thorn Lea Care Home ... the overhead Wires are for powering the Sheffield Supertram ... and the Tram is just pulling in to the siding leading to the Middlewood Park'n'Ride Terminus which is really handy for the Apartments Block. You could wait indoors for it arriving - which it does very regularly - and then put your coat on and walk a few hundred yards and board ... Simples! See also ... Image Image
