Rear of Hillsborough Park Cinema, Catch Bar Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield
Whilst the actual cinema closed in 1967 the signage on the rear wall is still quite clear ... not bad after 40 odd years wear and tear. The rear of the cinema is visible from the 'just around the corner' Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough Ground ... hence why the cinema owners would have been keen to advertise its location. It would have been even more easy to see when the trees where smaller. For a view of the front of the Cinema see ...

Former Hillsborough Park Cinema - Now Netto - Catch Bar Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield
This former cinema has been a Netto store for a number of years now, and prior to that the store has traded under various names - I first recall it in the late 70s being a branch of the Burnley based Moneysave Supermarket chain. The cinema was built in 1920 and opened early in February 1921 and was known as the Hillsborough Park Cinema, with the actual Hillsborough Park being a few hundred yards off picture to the right. It closed as a Star Cinema in October 1967 and re-opened as Star Bingo a few days later.
Image Image ... Following the takeover of Netto by Asda, in August 2011 this store was converted again ... see

Shops and Services, Catch Bar Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield
Next to the former Hillsborough Park Cinema (now Netto) are some business premises. Sheffield Engine Services are in the first building with the atypical 1950s type frontage 'affixed' to the garage building at the rear. Next to the garage is a block of shops ... one of which, according to the sign on the wall, was a Sweet Shop ... quite handy for people visiting the cinema two doors away!

Writing on the wall, Catch Bar Lane, Hillsborough, Sheffield
The removal of an advertising poster hoarding has revealed the 'writing on the wall' ... as Williams Confectionery Shop was only two doors away from the former Hillsborough Park Cinema they, no doubt, had some regular clients. For a view of the former cinema see
