Holmes Station, Rotherham
Holmes Station was an intermediate stop on the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway, the first railway in both towns. The railway was opened on 31 October 1838. A level crossing and footbridge are all that marks the site of the station today.

Railways at Holmes Junction, Rotherham 1998
View eastward from a footbridge off Psalter Road: the twin tracks to the left were the ex-Midland main lines, through Rotherham (Masborough) station (closed 3/10/1988) to Swinton, Wath Road Junction and Leeds/York, used by through fast trains. The single line in the centre is the Sheffield and Rotherham Railway's route to Rotherham Westgate terminus (closed 4/10/1952). It now serves C.F.Booth's scrapyard. On the right is the single-line Holmes Chord, opened 11/5/1987, connecting with the former Great Central main line from Sheffield (Victoria) to Doncaster through a new Rotherham Central station. After new connections were made between the parallel Midland and GC main lines at Nunnery Junction and at Aldwarke in April 1965, all through passenger trains east of Sheffield used the Midland station at Sheffield and ran via Wincobank (now Meadowhall) and Holmes Junction. Since than, the ex-GC line from Sheffield via Tinsley has been freight-only, with the exception of the Tram Train. Holmes station was behind the camera and was closed 19/9/1955 (cf Image).
