Smaller hydraulic pump, Avesta Cyclops works
This is part of the hydraulic power plant that was associated with an 8000 ton press Image The main squeeze was developed by a very large pump Image while the rams to retract the press were powered by a pair of these more modest three throw motor driven pumps. The other is in the background. The works has long since closed.

Meaty hydraulic pump, Avesta Cyclops Works.
This is the main hydraulic pump for an 8000 ton hydraulic press Image It is about 700 horsepower (from memory) and is a three throw device that looks like it's carved from the solid and is motor driven through a fluid flywheel (also known as a Foettinger coupling or torque converter). This drives the main rams for applying the squeeze. The back-off rams are driven by smaller, duplicated hydraulic pumps of a lighter/more conventional appearance.

Putting the squeeze on, Avesta Cyclops Works.
This works is now closed. This hydraulic press was of 1912 by Davy and could exert 8000 tons. The main pressing is done by the central rams and there are two outer rams that take the press back up relatively quickly. The yellow and black striped object is a chock that can be inserted to keep the press open. This works was doing defence work but nobody batted an eyelid when we asked for permission to photograph.
