Winter Street Hospital (Former), Winter Street, Sheffield - 3
This view shows the end design of one of the four identically designed Infectious Disease Wards ... these had patient access to the roof for 'fresh air' - called 'airing courts' - and the safety railings can clearly be seen. Part of Bartolomé House is visible in the background.

Update in November 2017
I have been contacted by Bryan Smith, who lived in this Lodge, with his Dad (Bernard) and Mum (Clare) from 1942 until 1962. His Dad and Mum were Head Porter and General Lodge Caretaker respectively.
Bryan has many happy memories of living in the Lodge, despite the outside toilet, and fondly remembers many Christmas Eves when some of the Doctors and Nurses used to gather at the Lodge for Drinks and a Sing-Song.
He specifically remembers one occasion when the Matron - a Miss Atkinson - joined in with the festivities to the surprise of the others.
As Winter Street Hospital was scheduled to close, his Dad and Mum moved out of the Lodge to alternative employment. His Dad worked at the NCB offices in Ranmoor.
However they missed working for the Hospital Service and moved to Weybridge in Surrey where his Dad took over the role as Head Porter at Weybridge Hospital.
Happy Days and Memories ... despite that outside loo !!

Winter Street Hospital (Former), Winter Street, Sheffield - 1 ... Later re-named St George?s Hospital
Winter Street Hospital - also known as and shown on the 1905 OS map as the City Hospital, and much later St George’s Hospital - was opened in 1881 for the treatment of Infectious Diseases.
It comprised four blocks of wards with roof top ‘airing courts’... the remains of which can be seen in the picture.
During The Great War it was used as Military Hospital.
This hospital - together with the Royal Infirmary - closed in the 1970s, with both being 'replaced' by the Royal Hallamshire Hospital.
After some refurbishment, the site was re-opened in 1975 as St George’s Hospital (for Geriatric Patients). It continued in this guise until it finally closed as a hospital 1990.
After a superb and sympathetic renovation, the site, was again, re-opened, in 1997, as the University of Sheffield’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, with the buildings being known as Bartolomé House. Some years later, the School of Nursing and Midwifery transferred to Samuel Fox House, situated at the Northern General Hospital site. At this point the buildings transferred to the University of Sheffield's School of Law.

Winter Street Hospital (Former), Winter Street, Sheffield - 2a
This building was not one of the wards ... they are situated behind this one. Being to the side of the main buildings it may have been an Administrative Block or Nurse's Home. Currently it is in use by Sheffield Health and Social Care as St Georges Community Health Centre.

Community Health Centre, Winter Street, Sheffield
This former nurses’ home, dating from 1892, was added to the former Borough Council’s infectious diseases hospital and sanatorium built in 1881. The latter is visible on the left in the distance. This nurses’ home is now known as the St George's Community Health Centre, whereas the University of Sheffield’s Law School now occupies the former hospital buildings and is known as Bartolemé House.

'Seeing Double' at Bartolom? House, Winter Street Hospital (Former), Winter Street, Sheffield
This sign shows both the current and previous occupants of the lovely Bartolomé House ... the original main entrance building of the Winter Street Hospital. I can't think of any link between Midwives and Lawyers so I'll leave it there ... no more comment necessary.
