Winter Street Hospital (Former), Winter Street, Sheffield - 1 ... Later re-named St George?s Hospital

Winter Street Hospital - also known as and shown on the 1905 OS map as the City Hospital, and much later St George’s Hospital - was opened in 1881 for the treatment of Infectious Diseases. It comprised four blocks of wards with roof top ‘airing courts’... the remains of which can be seen in the picture. During The Great War it was used as Military Hospital. This hospital - together with the Royal Infirmary - closed in the 1970s, with both being 'replaced' by the Royal Hallamshire Hospital. After some refurbishment, the site was re-opened in 1975 as St George’s Hospital (for Geriatric Patients). It continued in this guise until it finally closed as a hospital 1990. After a superb and sympathetic renovation, the site, was again, re-opened, in 1997, as the University of Sheffield’s School of Nursing and Midwifery, with the buildings being known as Bartolomé House. Some years later, the School of Nursing and Midwifery transferred to Samuel Fox House, situated at the Northern General Hospital site. At this point the buildings transferred to the University of Sheffield's School of Law.
