The Nail Forge, Barnsley Road, Hoylandswaine
The previous owner and the Sheffield Trades Historical Society have carried out a considerable amount of work on the building, but the roof still has to be repaired.

The hearth in the Nail Forge, Hoylandswaine
Here metal bars from Wortley Top Forge were heated and hammered into shape to produce nails. You had to make thousands of nails in a day to make a living, so the whole family helped to do the work.

The chimney in the Nail Forge, Hoylandswaine
This worried me. Only half of the chimney is supported and the roof structure is not very strong. The chimney sits on an iron plate, which I suppose must be secured to the brickwork around the back of the hearth by long rag bolts. However that brickwork is in a poor state.

The bellows in the Nail Forge, Hoylandswaine
These are not the original bellows, but are typical of the ones that were used in small workshops like this. They were operated by a lever. For an image of the label, see Image

Repairing dry stone wall at Hoylandswaine
This was on day two of the 2 day course on dry stone walling. I learnt that we didn't have enough space to lay out all the stone we would need for doing our own wall.
