Nirvana in Deepcar, Manchester Road, Deepcar
The fire which destroyed the 'Chipboard Store' in Deepcar also revealed this 'writing on the wall' ... Initially I thought it said MR VAN ... then I realised it says NIRVANA. Does anybody know why this was painted on this building ... and why? The Dictionary.com meaning of Nirvana is ... a place or state characterized by freedom from or oblivion to pain, worry, and the external world. Mmmmmmmm ... doesn't sound like Deepcar to me!
Image In August 2010 I have been contacted by Jonathan Clitheroe who writes "I would hazard Terry that this is a musical reference. Nirvana were a huge band between the release of their groundbreaking album Nevermind in 1991 up to the death of frontman Kurt Cobain in April 1994. I don't know if this timeline fits with your photo but a lot of the youth of the day including myself were well into 'grunge'. Personally I like any geograph with a musical link and try to seek out places where things musical happened." Mystery solved methinks ... thanks Jonathan.

Tracy Island in Deepcar ... Don't tell Blue Peter!
Back in 1992 there was a shortage of these toys ... and Blue Peter came to the rescue by showing how a Tracy Island could be made using 'Sticky Back Plastic', 'Toilet Roll Inners' and the like ... follow this link to get your own fact sheet ... http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/classic/bluepeter/makes/tracyisland.pdf

Deepcar Parade ... Doctor, Double Glazing and Butchery!
This parade of buildings has on the left the 'Old' Doctors' Surgery ... in the middle a Double Glazing Showroom and Offices ... and on the right a closed Butchering Dept building. I presume the Butchering Dept was part of a Co-op Shop back in the good old days. To see a 'close up' of the 'Old' Doctors and the 'New' Medical Centre follow the links.
