Old milepost
This metal milepost is one of 6 remaining on the A629 and B6462 route from Sheffield to Penistone. Fortunately the other 5 are complete. It was repainted in 2020 but difficult to photograph unless on a bike or walking past. 2 others from the series have been lost through vehicle collision and roadworks.

Old milepost
This milepost is on a very narrow pavement on the A61 just north of the A629, Hallwood Road, junction. Someone has painted it recently but not been back to repaint the legend. On the remaining mileposts on this route the distance to Penistone has been ground off at some time. Maybe the wrong numbers were cast although another route from Thurgoland was developed in the early 20C.

Old milestone
The last of the West Riding 1893/94 stones on the route of the Rotherham to Wortley turnpike of 1740-1883. That old route crossed what is now the A61 Barnsley to Sheffield road as does the A629 onwards to Wortley. The pavement was tarmacked in 2018 and most of the milestone is in the ground including CHAPELTOWN/1½ MILES on the lefthand face. Fortunately that keeps the cracked attachment in place. What can be seen has been crudely painted.
