The Roman Baths, Stoney Middleton
The bath house is much more recent than the Romans Image Attempts to promote the curative effects of drinking and/or bathing in the tepid water were overshadowed by the more glamorous spas at Harrogate, Bath, etc. Access to the spring is banned "for health and safety reasons"

The Roman Baths, The Nook, Stoney Middleton
Although popularly known as the Roman Baths, there is no evidence that the Romans ever built a bath here. Roman coins have been found locally so possibly offerings were made at the spring. In the Middle Ages the water was thought to have curative properties.

The Roman Baths, Stoney Middleton
A different view of the Roman Baths. The waters here have been revered for their curative properties for several centuries and the plaque on the front wall identifies a range of potentially treatable conditions at the time including rheumatism, 'too great heat' and 'saltness of blood'. The Baths failed to match the popularity of those in Buxton and Matlock and the site fell into disrepair before being eventually restored in the 1980s.
