Work bench in The Portland Works, Sheffield
Commissioned by Robert F. Mosley (1841-1921) and designed by J.H. Jenkinson, Architects, planning permission was approved for the building of The Portland Works on the 15th of September 1876 and the complex was built soon after in one phase. R. F. Mosley & Co. Ltd., manufacturer of cutlery and silverware, was the first major tenant and the first firm in the world to produce stainless steel cutlery. This company continued to operate on the site until the late 1950s. Nowadays, the works accommodate a range of small businesses that include traditional metal working but also artists' studios and furniture makers.
