End of the line at Halfway
The end of the Sheffield Supertram line to Halfway can be seen here ending just by the roundabout. On the left a tram is waiting at the Halfway tram stop. Image

Line to nowhere
The tram line to Halfway continues past the Halfway tram stop for a few yards, and then ends at this point. Beyond is the roundabout at the junction of Eckington Way and Station Road. This photograph was taken in 1995, the year the line opened, but 14 years later this remains the terminus. There has been talk that one day this line could be extended further; if so some way of negotiating the roundabout would have to be found. Any such extension is probably many years away. Although Manchester and Nottingham are extending their systems, Sheffield has never been able to, and all that is currently on the horizon, is the addition of 4 new trams to the current fleet of 25. Halfway tram terminus
This point is less than a mile from the Derbyshire boundary, and probably the tram attracts many commuters from Derbyshire into Sheffield City Centre, as there is a large park-and-ride facility here.

Tram 03 at Halfway tram stop
In the early years of the Sheffield Supertram system, it was known as South Yorkshire Supertram, and this is what appears in the destination indicator above the windscreen. At that time the trams were painted in this rather drab light grey livery, with a dark blue almost grey skirt at the bottom. This tram was subsequently renumbered 103. Image

Sheffield: Halfway tram terminus
Car 111 is in the Stagecoach livery. There was a time when the tramway, and all the buses, were going to be in public ownership, and operated as an integrated transport system. The Thatcher and Major governments saw that idea off in very short order, and now, bus competes with bus, bus competes with tram, fares are too high to attract many out of their cars, etc.... But at least there is a well-used park-and-ride system at the outer tram termini.
