Old milestone
A view to show the position of the Calver 9, Gleadless 5 milestone after some of the hedge had been cleared. The chevrons are at the entrance to lane leading to Upper Birchett Farm. The legend on the milestone on the left side of the front - GLEADLESS/5/MILES. On the right side - CALVER/9/MILES. The tollroad was extended to Gleadless in 1825 so these milestones will date from the mid 19thC. In just over ¼mile this road enters South Yorkshire/Sheffield.

Milestone on Rod Moor Road, originally the Gleadless to Calver Turnpike
The turnpike dates to 1781, but this milestone may be later. It's virtually invisible for most of the year, overgrown in the grassy verge. Gleadless 3. Calver 9. Except it should read Gleadless 5! The highlighted characters seem to be a more recent addition.
