Ecclesall Library, Ecclesall Road South, Sheffield
Once upon a time there was a library in this suburb; it was in a fine old building which was perhaps more suited to living in than being a public library. It also needed some considerable money spending on repairs. In a round of savage cuts, it was one of several libraries closed by Sheffield Council. It was situated in a beautiful garden on the site of Image So for many years, despite the library having been the busiest branch in the city, this suburb was without a library. The house became a dining pub! Eventually a deal was done between the Council and developers, whereby the developers were allowed to demolish the house, despite a local outcry (the house and gardens had been given by a benefactor to the city, for the benefit of the people), and build an apartment block, plus a new library.
